Prosthodontics
Restoring and replacing missing teeth. Ceramic restorations are made in the clinic’s own CAD/CAM laboratory.
What is chosen and when
- Crown. When a tooth is badly damaged or root-treated but the root still holds. A crown covers the tooth and restores its shape and resistance to load.
- Bridge. When one or more teeth are missing and the neighbouring teeth can carry the structure. It requires those teeth to be ground down — the main difference from an implant.
- Removable denture. When a larger number of teeth are missing. The patient takes it out and cleans it.
- Skeletal denture. A removable restoration with a metal framework — thinner, stronger and more comfortable than a conventional full denture, provided there are teeth to carry it.
The CAD/CAM laboratory
The Dental centre includes its own dental technology laboratory with a CAD/CAM system. A restoration is designed digitally and milled from a ceramic block on site — with no dispatch to an outside laboratory and no waiting between steps.
In practice this means fewer visits and a more accurate fit, because the same digital file is used from the impression through to the finished crown.
How treatment goes
- Examination and assessment of the remaining teeth and supporting tissue; radiographic diagnostics where needed.
- Treatment before prosthetic work — decay and inflammation are dealt with first, because a restoration is built on a healthy base.
- Preparation of the supporting teeth and an impression, conventional or digital.
- Fabrication of the restoration and a try-in.
- Final fitting and adjustment of the bite.
Maintenance
A tooth under a crown or bridge can still develop disease — the margin of a restoration is where plaque gathers most easily. Care therefore differs little from looking after your own teeth: a brush, interdental cleaning and a check-up once a year.
Removable dentures are taken out and cleaned daily. Over time the shape of the edentulous ridge changes and the denture begins to slip — a reline is then done, rather than a new denture.
