Ultrasound and Doppler
An examination without radiation, in real time. You receive the report immediately afterwards, together with the doctor’s explanation.
How it works
An ultrasound examination uses sound waves at a frequency too high to hear. The waves reflect off the boundaries between tissues of differing density, and the machine builds an image from those echoes — in real time, as the probe moves across the skin.
That is why ultrasound shows not only shape but movement: the beating of the heart, blood flow, organs shifting with breathing. It is the only routine imaging method that shows motion.
The examination is painless and uses no ionising radiation, so it can be repeated as often as needed — including during pregnancy and in children.
What is examined
- The thyroid gland — nodules, changes in size and structure.
- Abdominal organs — liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys.
- The pelvis.
- Breasts — as a complement to mammography, or as the primary examination in younger women, where tissue is denser.
- Soft tissue, lymph nodes, joints.
- Blood vessels — colour Doppler: narrowing, plaque, speed and direction of flow.
- Transcranial Doppler (TCD) — flow through the vessels of the brain.
The machine also works in 3D and 4D modes.
Preparation
For an examination of the abdominal organs you are asked not to eat for 6 to 8 hours beforehand — gas and bowel contents block the view of the organs. Water is allowed.
For a pelvic examination a full bladder is often required: drink about a litre of water an hour before the appointment and do not empty your bladder until the examination.
No preparation is needed for the thyroid, breasts, soft tissue or Doppler examinations. Bring earlier reports — comparison with a previous examination is often more important than the new image itself.
How the examination goes
Gel is applied to the skin to remove the air between the probe and the body — without it no image forms. The gel is cold but wipes off easily and leaves no marks on clothing.
The examination usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, Doppler somewhat longer. The doctor performs it personally and gives you the report immediately, explaining what can be seen.
