Cosmetic dentistry

Correcting the shape and colour of teeth. Work is done on treated teeth — appearance comes after health, not instead of it.

What it covers

  • Composite restorations — repairing shape, closing gaps, rebuilding a chipped part of a tooth.
  • Whitening — lightening the natural colour of tooth substance.
  • Scaling and polishing — often enough on its own to restore the natural colour, before any whitening.
  • Replacing old, discoloured fillings with new ones in the colour of the tooth.

Treatment first, appearance second

Cosmetic procedures are carried out on healthy, treated teeth. Decay under a filling, gum inflammation or an untreated canal are not solved by a cosmetic procedure — they are treated first, because otherwise the result will not last.

For the same reason, scaling and an examination precede whitening: deposits and inflammation affect both colour and sensitivity.

Whitening — what to realistically expect

Whitening acts on natural tooth substance. It does not act on fillings, crowns or bridges — these keep their colour, so after whitening they sometimes have to be replaced to match. That is worth allowing for in advance, at the planning stage.

Temporary sensitivity to cold in the first days afterwards is normal and settles on its own.

The result is not permanent. How long it holds depends above all on habits: coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco bring the colour back faster than anything else.

Restorations

Composite materials are built up in layers and matched to the colour of the neighbouring teeth. This deals with chipped corners, small gaps and irregular shape — without the grinding a crown would require.

Where a tooth is more heavily damaged or has been root-treated, composite has reached its limit and a crown is the better solution. Which is more suitable in your case is assessed at the examination.

Frequently asked questions

How long does whitening last?
It is not permanent. Duration depends above all on habits — coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco bring the colour back fastest.
Does whitening work on crowns and fillings?
No. It acts only on natural tooth substance, so restorations sometimes have to be replaced after whitening to match the colour.
Does whitening damage teeth?
With an examination beforehand and a properly performed procedure, temporary sensitivity to cold is the usual reaction and settles on its own.
Can I have a cosmetic procedure straight away if I have decay?
No. Decay and gum inflammation are treated first, because otherwise the cosmetic result will not last.
